Good Brewery Practices > Having a Knowledgeable Staff
As we’ve mentioned in a previous blog, the craft beer business has exploded in the last few years. When people visit a brewery, the entire experience should be considered – from the atmosphere to the quality of the product to the knowledge of the staff. In such a competitive space, it’s paramount that your employees not only like the beer, but that they know how to sell it and explain its characteristics. In this article, we’re going to dive deeper into how to train a knowledgeable craft beer staff member. Even more importantly, address your insurance needs with a Glen Rock Brewery Insurance policy.
Basic knowledge of the product is required, especially if the beers served are local products. Your employees should know the terminology, vocabulary, difference in beer types, major ingredients, and flavor differentiators.
According to the Brewer’s Association, beer service training should start with how to describe beer. Quick and accurate descriptions are important for both guests and servers. Discuss characteristics as described above when learning through tasting. Follow with a discussion of the glassware styles used in your brewpub. Include the definition of a “beer clean” glass complete with examples of how to tell if the glass is not clean. Share both an explanation and demonstration of a proper pour, pointers for handling the glass properly and tips for inspecting the glass, along with an explanation of the brewpub’s preferred approach to bottle service.
Learning is ongoing.
While the basics of craft beer can be taught in a comprehensive training program, there is always more to learn. As new products and techniques become available, craft brewery owners should make an effort to continue their employee’s education. An interactive session can be held to get ideas for flavor pairings, serving suggestions, flavor undertones and more. The more your employees know and can share with your clients, the more beer you’re bound to sell.
