Classic Car Care: Keeping it Road-Ready

For many classic car enthusiasts and collectors, maintaining it is half the fun. As a labor of love, there are plenty of to-do’s that need regular attention in order to keep the vehicle in pristine condition. In this series of posts, we’re going to explore the best ways to maintain your collector vehicle. Before reading on, protect your investment with a custom-tailored Glen Rock Collector Car Insurance policy.

Store it.

Unless you have the room to store your collector car at home, chances are you’ll need to pay for a storage garage space each month. If this is the case, ensure it’s a climate controlled garage to prevent excess moisture which can cause rusting, tarnishing, and corrosion. If your garage is not climate controlled, consider a Car Capsule and a dehumidifier to prevent damaging your collector vehicle.

Stick to hand washing.

Don’t entrust the beauty of your classic car with just anyone. Commercial car washes often don’t take the necessary precautions to protect your car. Stick to a mild soap, clean soft towels, and a chamois. Be sure to wax it at least twice per year, as well.

Get it tuned.

According to Wilson Auto, at least once a year it is advisable to have your classic car or truck looked over by an expert. Of course you can inspect the basics like tires, belts and hoses, but it is also a good idea to get a second set of trained eyes and ears to help to look for issues. A minor issue could turn into a major issue if not detected in time. That is why it is a good idea to take your vehicle to your local pros each year to have the vehicle looked over thoroughly. This is also good for the vehicle’s history to get a specialist service stamp in the service book.

Avoid customization.

The originality of the vehicle is what gives it its worth in the first place. So, unless you never plan to sell it in the future, do not add any customizations of the vehicle. From motors to parts to paint color, keep the original version of your collector vehicle intact.
